Book of the Week: June 21st 2016
Tuesday, June 21, 2016
So, I've decided that if I really want to pursue a career in the English/Writing field, I NEED TO READ. It needs to become a weekly chore instead of something I simply enjoy. It's going to need a little dedication. Thus, I've started my Book of the Week series!
I started last week with Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell. I could not put it down and it seemed like it came at such a wonderful time. Waiting for my boyfriend (I just called him my boyfriend in writing...this is a moment) to return to Pittsburgh from a two week vacation, I perused Pitt's bookstore and found Fangirl on a clearance rack. I snatched her up and even the cashier was shocked to see her marked down so low. Fangirl was fated to fall into my hands; I landed a phone call with a Program Director of a Writing Program I'm particularly interested in and Cather's insecurity (and later, bravery) in her writing gave me the ounce of courage I needed to just ask what I needed to ask.
This week's book is The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P. by Adelle Waldman. I hate it. I hate this book. I think it's awful. It isn't holding my attention. I barely read three sentences before I find myself wandering off. I'm trying to keep my ranting about this novel to a minimum, but this was a Buzzfeed suggestion and I have to say I am sorely disappointed. It feels sloppy, concepts and character traits are repeatedly shoved down the reader's throat. Ugh. I can't wait to be done with this one.
What books are you reading right now? Any suggestions? I have a list going, but would love to add to it! And while you're at it, follow me on Goodreads!

I just finished The Goldfinch which is a stunning piece of writing! I didn't connect with it at first but I'm so glad I persevered, the characters have such complexity and the plot takes you to places you just wouldn't expect, definitely worth a shot. What sort of writing are you into pursuing?

DeleteI'm trying to decide right now whether I'd like to go into Non-fiction or Fiction writing...hopefully before my application goes in! haha!
